Month, Day: 166, Honour, Splendour (Majesty)
We're now to the last of the Motivationals. As we head to the Ascendants, with the New Year looming (167), we will use the reality of the Manifestation as a major theme for discussion. This has to do with more than audacity. It's core.
Lets start with a couple of quotes from the SAQ, mainly to carry on Questions.
As mentioned before, the first part covers the influence of the Prophets in the evolution of humanity. Allowing this notion is a big step. The third part considers attributes of the Manifestations of God. The fourth part looks at man's details.
Now, given an acceptance of the first part as a basis, then the details, as they are covered in the subsequent parts, follow and ought to have relevance to true science.
SAQ #37: But for this Essence of the essences, this Truth of truths, this Mystery of mysteries, there are reflections, auroras, appearances and resplendencies in the world of existence. The dawning-place of these splendors, the place of these reflections, and the appearance of these manifestations are the Holy Dawning-places, the Universal Realities and the Divine Beings, Who are the true mirrors of the sanctified Essence of God. All the perfections, the bounties, the splendors which come from God are visible and evident in the Reality of the Holy Manifestations, like the sun which is resplendent in a clear polished mirror with all its perfections and bounties.
SAQ #51: All beings, whether large or small, were created perfect and complete from the first, but their perfections appear in them by degrees. The organization of God is one; the evolution of existence is one; the divine system is one.
It is obvious that some type of 'supernatural' appendage (it can be minimal - our task, to determine this) is required for science to take the next step. Otherwise, it mainly revolves around the pit of materialism and hollows our the human core. The manner in which this will play out is unknown, is feared, but is necessary. Let's take some time to develop the proper view, or at least define what is needed, from First Principles.
One of those is this.
SAQ #78: The tent of existence is upheld upon the pillar of justice and not upon forgiveness. The continuance of mankind depends upon justice and not upon forgiveness.
So, work is a key issue, with all sorts of implications.

Questions and more
Month, Day: 166, Questions, Honour (Beauty)
Month, Day: 166, Questions, Sovereignty (Perfection)
Questions never end and recur with several patterns. Too, with Questions, we have the basis for our knowledge and science. Now that we're on the Ascendant side toward Honour, we ought to consider a basis for audacity.
This will take some time, but let's consider the importance of Some Answered Questions (SAQ). Notice the topics covered in the Contents. The first section deals with the influence of the Manifestation (SAQ #1) on human progress. What is a Manifestation? How comes the influence?
The first question invokes the Twin duties, yet there is an operational theme involved, to boot. That second question will take longer to answer as it is a motivation for audacity. Not that the first is easy.
However, looking at the first question, for now, we can dispatch it in part by referencing the Attributes which is an uncountable set. Yet, we were given the nineteen recurring for some reason leading to thoughts like Transcendence and Ascendant.
Given that we can juxtapose, despite arguments by the Brights, what comes up in this context will be delusion and futility. You see, those of the denial side will apply the delusional label for any beyond an extremely limited operational viewpoint where those of certain neuropeptidergic and cellular traits reign with help from their ever-growing artifacts that are based both in thought and matter.
For those who do understand or comprehend (see below), we see from Search that it's endless, in fact, the 4th implies a certain type of imposed limitation. Yet, it's not futile as we are always encouraged to seek (Questions, of course! Too, acts over words).
Aqdas #186: Say: This is the Dayspring of Divine knowledge, if ye be of them that understand, and the Dawning-place of God’s commandments, if ye be of those who comprehend.
Ultimately, and soon, we'll have a collection of thoughts of the Manifestation's life and purpose. We can start with Abraham (Knowledge) and Moses (Veiled from this was Moses). Then, we will look at some existential issues related to the theme.

Consistency
Month, Day: 166, Questions, Questions (Glory)
Some of the brights look to maintain multivalued positions which might be one factor leading toward relativism. Or, it could be that this technique dampens the advent of those things that weaken consistency. After all, it seems to help maintain positions that are not as supportable as they seem, at this time.
So, it can be interesting to hold juxtaposed positions when considering audacity's methods which can allow some type of polarity assessment. Such as, on the matter of degrees of talent, and station, there are many things to consider.
For instance, there is the principle of respecting the law (various things to discuss here) and others. Too, we know that all types of roles are necessary for a sustainable civilization; some of these roles may receive more favorable attention than others. Yet, all are deserving of respect, especially in the context of work being worship.
In the scheme of things, though, there is the 'king' role albeit that those in a representative type of society may wonder who fits in there. As an aside, one may remark that the modern CEO is not unlike, many times, some of those who may have been aristocratic by birth. Other examples could apply.
But, consider the following.
Aqdas #84: How great the blessedness that awaiteth the king who will arise to aid My Cause in My kingdom, who will detach himself from all else but Me! Such a king is numbered with the companions of the Crimson Ark—the Ark which God hath prepared for the people of Bahá. All must glorify his name, must reverence his station, and aid him to unlock the cities with the keys of My Name, the omnipotent Protector of all that inhabit the visible and invisible kingdoms.
Aqdas #189: We have appointed two signs for the coming of age of the human race: the first, which is the most firm foundation, We have set down in other of Our Tablets, while the second hath been revealed in this wondrous Book. ... Notes #194: One of the signs of the maturity of the world is that no one will accept to bear the weight of kingship. Kingship will remain with none willing to bear alone its weight. That day will be the day whereon wisdom will be manifested among mankind.
So, we see the role, its necessity, the myriad ways that it may be played, the potential rewards of having the role, and more. Also, we know that it's not something to pursue, meaning, of course, that actual pursuit most likely would encompass problematic themes and events (too many examples throughout history to mention here).
Yet, that necessity has no possibility of diminishing to zero any time soon. That is, the role will be played. If it were always political in context, then the dilemma may less somewhat. But, it is not, therefore consideration, and discussion, is apropos.
And, not in any way being glib or disrespectful, a question has to be asked: does a role on the UHJ imply a sort of collective kingship or any type of epitome for the human existence? That is, ought that be the goal of a Baha'i.
Well, actually, we know that half of the population is not included in the mix which fact ought to help determine the answer. Yet, the answer also has to look at the autodidact's position as it may apply to independent investigation of the truth.
Remarks:
12/22/2011 -- We will need to get back to the brights (Christopher, et al).
12/27/2009 -- There are lessons to learn from the SAQ.

Chords
Month, Day: 166, Questions, Knowledge (Justice)
Chords have been mentioned several times: Twin duties, Operational II, 7 Valleys.
This fifth day in sense of sevenths, namely Light/Knowledge/Loftiness, implies a whole lot.
Note that this chord hits three of the Groups: Teleological, Operational, and Ascendant.
---
With Questions, we're into the final of the sevenths for the year, going toward the Ascendants, which are a precursor to the New Year.
Remarks:
08/08/2013 -- Perfection/Perfection.
02/24/2010 -- Ascendant to Transcendent.

Sevenths
Month, Day: 166, Questions, Might (Perfection)
Month, Day: 166, Questions, Will (Grace)
As well as the Groups, we have been given 'seven', in various ways. We see this every month as the weeks unfold.
Aqdas #181: The world’s equilibrium hath been upset through the vibrating influence of this most great, this new World Order. Mankind’s ordered life hath been revolutionized through the agency of this unique, this wondrous System—the like of which mortal eyes have never witnessed.
SAQ #51: All beings, whether large or small, were created perfect and complete from the first, but their perfections appear in them by degrees.
The first needs to be looked at for its contribution to Questions. The second? How we ought to view evolution?
Remarks:
12/22/2009 -- In music, of course, we see the octave and others.

Science as gift
Month, Day: 166, Questions, Light (Justice)
Month, Day: 166, Questions, Mercy (Majesty)
Aqdas #142: Verily, He revealed certain laws so that, in this Dispensation, the Pen of the Most High might have no need to move in aught but the glorification of His own transcendent Station and His most effulgent Beauty. Since, however, We have wished to evidence Our bounty unto you, We have, through the power of truth, set forth these laws with clarity and mitigated what We desire you to observe.
In other words, we have Transcendence, as we see with the first Group. Then, with Mercy (Teleological), we are allowed clarification, even through Questions, in many forms.
As we saw last time, we have science as a gift. One has (ought) to consider what is missing given the normal modes that are so limiting. Of course, when will those questions, implied by audacity, come to fore as deserving of attention?
FWU/Science: ... Science is the first emanation from God toward man. ... We have already stated that science or the attribute of scientific penetration is supernatural and that all other blessings of God are within the boundary of nature. ... Notwithstanding the gift of this supernatural power, it is most amazing that materialists still consider themselves within the bounds and captivity of nature. ...
We're 3/4ths into the Motivational.
Remarks:

Anticipating Questions
Month, Day: 166, Speech, Loftiness (Independence)
Month, Day: 166, Questions, Splendour (Glory)
SAQ #34: While the religion of God is the promoter of truth, the founder of science and knowledge, it is full of goodwill for learned men; it is the civilizer of mankind, the discoverer of the secrets of nature, and the enlightener of the horizons of the world.
So much to ask. And, various ways to do so. The theme of the month.
One thing to look at, autodidact'dly in pursuit of audacity, concerns a basis that has found little western sympathy.

But, of course
Month, Day: 166, Speech, Speech (Beauty)
Month, Day: 166, Speech, Questions (Perfection)
Before Questions, the basis of science, we would have praise and prayer.
Aqdas #31: Then, with radiance and joy, celebrate therein the praise of your Lord, the Most Compassionate. Verily, by His remembrance the eye is cheered and the heart is filled with light.
Aqdas #12: It hath been ordained that obligatory prayer is to be performed by each of you individually.
SAQ #62: Therefore, children, in return for this care and trouble, must show forth charity and beneficence, and must implore pardon and forgiveness for their parents.
Without Speech, what would we not have?
----
There are very many references that could be used.
One particular prayer says this: ... they may busy themselves at the Threshold of Thy oneness with servitude and worship, with salutation, adoration and praise. “I have not created spirits and men, but that they should worship me.”
The Motivational would deal with goals. How to be independent, yet world embracing in the proper mode, meaning non-hubris-tic?
This time of the year is definitely a time to consider the yearly measure. We're in the 14th month of 19. Looking forward, we have Questions and Honour prior to the time of the Ascendant, especially Loftiness.
---
We can remind ourselves about this.
But, some type of association with 'being' as it involves Creation must be describable via mathematics, as we see with operational effectiveness, even though none of the Writings can be said to be so formal (but, embedded are metaphors, etc.).
Remarks:
02/24/2010 -- Ascendant to Transcendent.
12/21/2009 -- More on the diagonal or square'd days.

We can remind ourselves about this.
- The Valley of Contentment: The tongue faileth in describing these three Valleys, and speech falleth short. The pen steppeth not into this region, the ink leaveth only a blot. In these planes, the nightingale of the heart hath other songs and secrets, which make the heart to stir and the soul to clamor, but this mystery of inner meaning may be whispered only from heart to heart, confided only from breast to breast.
- The Third Valley: The denizens of this plane speak no words—but they gallop their chargers. They see but the inner reality of the Beloved. To them all words of sense are meaningless, and senseless words are full of meaning.
But, some type of association with 'being' as it involves Creation must be describable via mathematics, as we see with operational effectiveness, even though none of the Writings can be said to be so formal (but, embedded are metaphors, etc.).

Utterance
Month, Day: 166, Speech, Might (Justice)
Month, Day: 166, Speech, Will (Majesty)
Of course, in the cycles, we have Speech before Questions.
So far not much here, yet, about the mystery of utterance. Aqdas #6: When ye desire to perform this prayer, turn ye towards the Court of My Most Holy Presence, this Hallowed Spot that God hath made the Centre round which circle the Concourse on High, and which He hath decreed to be the Point of Adoration for the denizens of the Cities of Eternity, and the Source of Command unto all that are in heaven and on earth; and when the Sun of Truth and Utterance shall set, turn your faces towards the Spot that We have ordained for you.
Now, some comments are motivated. The 'Centre' reminds one of return and moments, especially thoughts about internment restrictions. How significant in content is a hour's sweep?
The power of utterance suggests psychetheral dynamics (to be discussed).
---
Need to look at a couple of influences that can be observed, and tested. One is related to motor activity, somewhat like a congruent event, which can be of a locality or even imparted via the big screen. There is some power to that medium.
As mentioned before, music is a power, especially that with lyrics. Just too many examples can be shown for this to be scoffed at.
Another effect is of the imagination, which can be with or without a corresponding motor response, yet of some type of visceral importance.
In a sense, the imposition of a teacher's knowledge'd state onto the good student is something that needs more analysis. Some, on the learning side, say that it is an internalization of a lesson. Perhaps, the second of the twin duties manifests itself similarly.
Remarks:
12/06/2009 -- The Motivational implies goals and actions.

In terms of motivation, we can know various things, such as why things are and how we are to do and with what to do. Too, there can be continual attuning of the focus as choice is always there. Actually, the accounting (HW #31) ought to be daily.
Questions may abound, but we can know that the means exist.
Aqdas #70: All that are on earth shall pass away, while good deeds alone shall endure; to the truth of My words God doth Himself bear witness.
Whence do we see this? That is, questions are of science.
Remarks:
10/02/2011 -- More on means.
12/05/2010 -- Is it not true that extreme positions on the axis of the mindful can lead to a god-like state-fulness?
12/06/2009 -- The Motivational implies goals and actions.

What motivates?
Month, Day: 166, Speech, Glory (Grace)
What motivates? Well, we can talk about a lot of things. But, speaking from the position of being in a colder clime, one can say that just preparing to go out into the elements involves a bunch of motivation types. In the warmer climes, there are things that are easily ignored. Except, even then, one ought to think ahead and to look at using, perhaps, sunscreen before going into direct sunlight.
Some motivation can deal with necessities, for a large part. But, there is more to the story; mathematical problem solving requires motivation. Maslow had some insightful thoughts about how progress goes away from baser motivations.
We cannot look at motivation without considering the economic aspects.
A lot come under this concept. Yet, the real basis is what we see with the twin duties.

Motivational II
Month, Day: 166, Speech, Splendour (Perfection)
We're 14 months into the year and into the 2nd (Speech) of this group. We asked why Motivational for this group which will be followed by the Ascendant? Well, we saw that there is energy imparted in spring of each year, like a yearly measure.
Those early times, each year, are the Transcendent and Teleological. In the northern climes, we see the peak of the energy of summer in the Operational. Where, too, the fruits of this energy are abundant.
Then, the Motivational times are during the slowing down times, again in the northern climes, post harvesting and gathering. We see that much of the vegetative life goes into a suspended state, so to speak, as do some animals. In fact, many mammals do their retreat into hibernation.
The yearly changes, seasons, have been used as a metaphor for life. The juxtaposition of a cross-generational match is termed, May-October. So, it goes, too, for these Groups.
Somehow, it seems that this time is one for review. That is, from a sense of science, we would be looking at results. Then, when the Ascendant comes around, we would then work on rework of the necessary hypotheses.
Isn't it nice that we have these cycles always there?

Motivational
Month, Day: 166, Power, Dominion (Glory)
Month, Day: 166, Power, Loftiness (Beauty)
There might be some question about the name for this group which consists of Power, Speech, Questions, and Honour, whereas the others (Transcendent, Teleological, Operational) seem to more easily fit. Perhaps, that'll be addressed as the other months unfold.
We're almost done with Power which contained one of the Twin Days and which is a fairly central theme. Then, we will have the basis for science, namely Questions, following Speech and preceding Honour.
Much to ponder.

Month, Day: 166, Power, Power (Perfection)
Month, Day: 166, Power, Speech (Grace)
Month, Day: 166, Power, Questions (Justice)
We can reasonably ask, what is power (and Power - SAQ #42)?
As we see described by dictionary.com and wikipedia, power implies 'being able' in various ways. And, we see it starting the Motivational group which ought to have great importance.

- Power, too, pertains to both potential and action.
- Isaiah: Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.
- Iqan: Material fire consumeth the body, whereas the fire of the tongue devoureth both heart and soul. The force of the former lasteth but for a time, whilst the effects of the latter endure a century.

Power of music
Month, Day: 166, Power, Words (Grace)
Month, Day: 166, Power, Knowledge (Beauty)
As with anything, we have issues in the large and in the small, with the latter pertaining to the individual.
In the large, music is becoming more pervasive, and observable, as technology improves delivery and recording, however music is as old as we are.
And, it has a spiritual side where both words and tunes apply (Tablets #74).
In the current era, there would be plenty of places to begin an analysis, but Glenn Miller is a very good starting point. Then, one could look at how music changes over time including having more, and wider, awareness, such that some stars have a larger following than did some earlier kings.
In the small, it is interesting that technology can allow a type of immortality. One has to wonder if music could play more of a role as an educational resource than we have thought, as in, for one example, providing a means to convey meaning in an experiential fashion (SAQ #16).

Our power
Month, Day: 166, Power, Glory (Majesty)
Month, Day: 166, Power, Light (Beauty)
The Operational is done for the year, except for those monthly occurrences of days (Names, Might, Will, Knowledge).
The Motivational, which just started, consists of Power, Speech, Questions (basis for science), Honour.
We humans have several types of power, including the ability to use tools which causes all sorts of artifacts to abound. For the most part, our prowess has, can have, benefits (ever-advancing civilization). These we need to understand better.
Too, we have mental powers. Here, hubris can run amok as we see. How to dampen? Well, one way is prayer and thoughtful reflection on the Writings.
How does, or can, that impact our abilities to do science? Well, we know that we can know some things a priori, in the Kantian sense as well as that related to the Transcendent and the Teleological. But, there are limits as we have been told (4th Valley: Were all the denizens of earth and heaven to unravel this shining allusion, this darksome riddle, until the Day when the Trumpet soundeth, yet would they fail to comprehend even a letter thereof, for this is the station of God’s immutable decree, His foreordained mystery. Hence, when searchers inquired of this, He made reply, “This is a bottomless sea which none shall ever fathom.” And they asked again, and He answered, “It is the blackest of nights through which none can find his way.” ). Some of the limits are Operational, such as that type described by Heisenberg, and some result from analytic-synthetic dynamics, requiring acknowledgment for the quasi-empirical framework.
In short, we need to know better the two ways of knowing and doing.

Operational IV
Month, Day: 166, Knowledge, Loftiness (Grace)
As we leave the Operational times, a final thought might be in order. 2nd Valley: This station conferreth the true standard of knowledge, and freeth man from tests. In this realm, to search after knowledge is irrelevant, for He hath said concerning the guidance of travelers on this plane, “Fear God, and God will instruct thee.” And again: “Knowledge is a light which God casteth into the heart of whomsoever He willeth.”

Injustice
Month, Day: 166, Knowledge, Questions (Independence)
Again, the musings related to audacity are from the view of an autodidact who relishes the independence allowed by Questions.
HW #II-64: O OPPRESSORS ON EARTH! Withdraw your hands from tyranny, for I have pledged Myself not to forgive any man’s injustice. This is My covenant which I have irrevocably decreed in the preserved tablet and sealed with My seal.
There is a lot of injustice in the world. Some people seem more unjust than others. Of course, those who have more power have a broader influence and, hence, can have acts that seem to be more reprehensible than are the acts of those who have less power.
However, we are not to judge, in a sense, except for ourselves. As, we are to bring ourselves to account each day (HW #I-31), in very many ways.
Injustice can range from being non-green, to overworking man or animal, to raking in the dough with huge bonuses for work that does not warrant such (what work does?), to criminal abuse, to much more. From an Operational sense, one can see worries, about being unjust, culminating in non-action and paralysis.
Ah, around the corner is the Motivational which will come to the rescue by helping to constrain overly abundant worry and by assisting to motivate query where needed. That is, without Questions, how can we know anything?
And, science does (ought to) play in these fields (one might even expect that, topsy-turvy, these will be considered as the proper foci) as well as in those commonly attributed to the discipline, ala material and biological sciences.
Remarks:
12/06/2009 -- The Motivational implies goals and actions. Being just.

Wide path?
Month, Day: 166, Knowledge, Might (Beauty)
Month, Day: 166, Knowledge, Knowledge (Grace)
HW #II-17: O COMRADES! The gates that open on the Placeless stand wide and the habitation of the loved one is adorned with the lovers’ blood, yet all but a few remain bereft of this celestial city, and even of these few, none but the smallest handful hath been found with a pure heart and sanctified spirit.
There are several things to know. That there is a path; that the gates are wide open. That the path has always been (SAY: As for me, my Lord hath guided me into a straight path; a true religion, the creed of Abraham, the sound in faith; for he was not of those who join gods with God.)
But, questions abound, to boot. How wide is the path leading there? By what measure?
The way of science would match questions with what we know or can know ala the SAQ which suggests a new type of dialectic, perhaps.
Remarks:
10/27/2009 -- In Creation, a straight path is best exemplified by a ray of light, yet we know from relativity that light can bend. An allegorical reference about this would allow discussion of what is allowed. That is, characteristics, such as angle, would be apropos. That we have Abraham as the landmark for science can bring to fore many repressed ideas.

Light and Names
Month, Day: 166, Knowledge, Light (Grace)
Two of the four great festivals relate to births. That is, today (10/20) and next month (11/12).
These are, respectively, Light of Knowledge and Names of Power.
Now, in terms of the Attribute groups, we can consider a few things. For the first, we have a Teleological of an Operational. Then, we have an Operational of a Motivational.
Interesting juxtaposition, there. However, the emphasis on Operational seems to point to the importance of science to ourselves, far beyond what might be the current general opinion.
Science, from Abraham on.
SAQ #37: If the attributes are not identical with the Essence, there must also be a multiplicity of preexistences, and differences between the attributes and the Essence must also exist; and as Preexistence is necessary, therefore, the sequence of preexistences would become infinite. This is an evident error.
Remarks:
10/17/2012 -- There is a lot to reflect on, about the trip, especially the western loop.

Challenges
Month, Day: 166, Knowledge, Beauty (Beauty)
Month, Day: 166, Knowledge, Grandeur (Perfection)
As said before, we were given science with Abraham. Now, through time, the evolution of ideas has followed interesting paths, one controversy being, of course, those things that may have a Teleological flavor.
Aqdas #178: By God, this is the arena of insight and detachment, of vision and upliftment, where none may spur on their chargers save the valiant horsemen of the Merciful, who have severed all attachment to the world of being.
The following theme is similar to the two ways of knowing, with and without effort. The constructive ways of science emphasizes the second, though it cannot do without the first (one point of debate).
SAQ #61: For the spirit travels in two different ways: without means, which is spiritual traveling; and with means, which is material traveling: as birds which fly, and those which are carried.
Remarks:

Knowledge, at last
Month, Day: 166, Knowledge, Splendour (Independence)
We've been waiting for this month since 3/21. It has taken its time getting here. We are now 3/4ths the way through the Operational.
Some of the themes to discuss will deal with things like mode and method. Too, the timeless aspects are be touched upon, though they are really beyond understanding.
But, for a brief recap first, let's look, again, at the twin duties: know and obey. SAQ (#84) discusses the need for the second: If, by the help of science and knowledge, we wished to introduce these morals and customs, truly it would take a thousand years, and then they would not be spread throughout the masses.
We ought to be thinking of the Motivational, too.
In a sense, science has a non-short history, however we all can see that there has been a massive acceleration the past century. In fact, the past few years have been mind-boggling in the things that unfolded.
Yet, science, in the proper view, has a long history and has been here since Abraham (Knowledge: “And thus did we show Abraham the Kingdom of the Heavens and of the Earth, that He might be established in knowledge.”). For what end is the knowing of Creation?
Well, in the past, the Manifestations were here, left evidence, but then faded through time, except in the hearts of the believers. Let me say, apparently faded, as Those are Life if we only knew. The cardinality of that Set, meaning having had appearance here, is not small.
Now, like miracles, anything at a distance, whether in space or time, cannot be a strongly held as those local, and now. This is a common characteristic of man. Yet, even that is not entirely true, to wit, just look at problems of underdetermination and the related.
So, except, for those things based upon universals (physics, etc.) and the computational (will more fully explain this), most things have no support beyond those who are there to perceive them (ah, not Berkeley, again) and those who may observe remotely (think TV and other media of this type). One can argue that these two are different. The former rests heavily in the independent viewpoint that trusts perception; the latter is problematic from various angles but has been shown to be an effective means for information distribution.
But, there is another way. Just as we have the Writings, the Administration, and more, we'll be putting together a collective BASIS for certitude which will a growing framework to support both further science and other knowing. This suggests that science will continue to be two-fold, with that supposedly hard aspect continuing in its blind ways. The other side of science will admit the less hard, but strong.
Notice above, that there was mentioned physics and the computational. The computer will be the bridge and play a couple of roles. It will continue to be a fine instrument for mathematical, and related, types of processing. Additionally, it'll support that which is needed to more fully understand man's inherent being, or the potential thereof.
That last role's existence is only barely beginning to emerge. We'll be looking at it more closely as we go along here.
Remarks:
10/18/2009 -- Thomas continued the scientific attitude. There are challenges that audacity must overcome.

Dominion and Will
Month, Day: 166, Will, Dominion (Justice)
We have Knowledge, and its interesting paradoxes, coming up.
But, Dominion raises some questions, especially about what we can know a priori. It may be that we know a lot more than commonly accepted. But, that fore knowledge is not the same as cause.
SAQ #35: The foreknowledge of a thing is not the cause of its realization ... For example, tonight everyone knows that after seven hours the sun will rise, but this general foreknowledge does not cause the rising and appearance of the sun ...
However, such a talent (looking ahead), assuming that we can know consistently and by command (ah, how so?) could be put to good use.
Now, even in fore knowledge, there will be issues related to type, operational methods, potential effectiveness, and so forth.
By the way, one modern problem is that people have trusted mathematical extrapolation far beyond what is reasonable. And, these are not uneducated souls, either. Somehow, modern successes lead to some type of 'siren' (yes, think mythology) influence that warps the judgment.
Methinks that it's natural and to be expected; the only proper attenuation of these types of errors would be from a sound metaphysics. And, 'how is that to be' is the question.

Ah, Knowledge
Month, Day: 166, Will, Sovereignty (Grace)
Will operates within the twin duty framework with one of the duties being to know. That presupposes all sorts of things, as what does it mean to know?
Well, some claim internalization of a master's lessons is one way to know. Yes, that does seem to work in some cases, however note that the extreme mode of this is the zombie who is both a servant and an idiot. Is that the Will of the Creator?
Besides, with the Manifestation not being here, and there not being any representation of that Being on the planet, to whom is the subjection to point. Oh, don't say UHJ as are we expecting some embedded circuitry with which we'll all be controlled like mindless robots (apologies here, as some robotic functions are going to be fairly sophisticated -- yes, implying that the Turing test will be strongly met)?
You see, mostly that knowing type mentioned above is a superposition. Ah, thankfully, the generation gap, and the grave, prevents such from happening ad infinitum.
Well, we'll see that there are many ways to know, however we cannot just jump to that and avoid what the next couple of days will bring.

Will to question
Month, Day: 166, Will, Questions (Beauty)
Being 3/4ths into the Operational times brings up the theme of Questions that has been addressed before. It is the BASIS of science.
That 'obey' is part of the twin duties does not impede the role of Questions. And, it is not only the autodidact that must question.
Will is necessary both for maturity and knowledge. And, the generational gap (severing sword) must be understood in this context.

Yearly measure
Month, Day: 166, Will, Knowledge (Majesty)
Audacity poses questions about dynamics that need further study. What motivation? Consider the quote provided below in terms of a yearly push on the Baha day of Baha.
What effects could we discern with the proper model?
As we all know, as we age, the metaphor of the seasons for the changes that we experience is not just lightly correlated. And, though we know that the Creator's influence is of each moment, knowing that a special burst comes yearly would allow us to think about how we manage this for ourselves and for endeavors.
Too, we could use the insight to consider what the ways of science could know and show.
From the Aqdas (111): Happy the one who entereth upon the first day of the month of Bahá, the day which God hath consecrated to this Great Name. And blessed be he who evidenceth on this day the bounties that God hath bestowed upon him; he, verily, is of those who show forth thanks to God through actions betokening the Lord’s munificence which hath encompassed all the worlds. Say: This day, verily, is the crown of all the months and the source thereof, the day on which the breath of life is wafted over all created things. Great is the blessedness of him who greeteth it with radiance and joy. We testify that he is, in truth, among those who are blissful.
Finally, does the measure diminish, yearly, between Manifestations? Or, does it increase to offset the collection of flim-flam? Those are Teleological questions.
Remarks:
03/22/2022 -- Still at it. The yearly measure comes with the wafting mentioned in the Aqdas. Later, we saw group concepts applied. See Splendour/Glory from 179.

12/21/2009 -- More on the diagonal or square'd days.
12/06/2009 -- The Motivational implies goals and actions. Too, the day? Splendour, Splendour. Or, Baha, Baha. Seems as if each month recapitulates the year, in a sense (brings to mind the adage of ontogeny recapitulating phylogeny - suggesting some organic [living being, of course] analog?).

Will to will
Month, Day: 166, Will, Will (Justice)
Several topics could be apropos to the theme, yet one arises naturally.
We know that people have Will, namely through observing volition in ourselves and others. Of course, we can know this through Revelation, too.
What influence does one's will have on others? That is, we know there are differences between individuals, by design, that exhibit themselves various ways. Stronger wills impose their views on those of the lessor. In that very large middle, we might have more egalité than not.
Some think that the give and take within the playing out of a program's unfolding requires resolution of conflicts that are will enabled. That is, a big question about performance, and its expectation, concerns what is possible. For instance, 'cannot do' does not mean 'will not do' in many cases. Yet, many times an inexperienced view, willing to try, is allowed to create a mess. But, we do, or can, learn thereby.
The modern view loses itself in the confounding that is inevitable. Why? For one, the computer has turned things around thereby placing many modern situations in more of a stack-of-cards condition than is realized.
Trying to resolve how to theoretically describe some aspects of these things led to game theory which can be applied in many situations. Yet, there is more than that esteemed field covers.
Perhaps, themes related to audacity are necessary. Similar to there being in situ variations, people interactions are as varied and, perhaps, even more so. Too, part of the 'in situ' property would be who's there, that is, local influences upon some type of medium.
Ah, one might say, that's been thrown out. Or, such considerations are beyond the purview of ourselves here on this side of Creation.
But, wait, such dynamics may be very much analogous to that behind thermodynamics and could very well be amenable to our understanding or, at least, to our utilitarian interests.
Do we know a priori?

World embracing
Month, Day: 166, Will, Light (Majesty)
Earlier, in the Operational times, there was mention of our 'in situ' selves as being books that need to be read. In fact, there is some significance regarding sites and burial duties. It has been said, heard as a tradition, that the soul remains sensitive to the body's state.
Well, some things are beyond our current understanding. But, Will is not one of those. So, lots of questions come to mind. What is this? And, why do we have it?
One counsel has been to lift our minds beyond the in situ: (Tablets after Aqdas) Let your vision be world-embracing, rather than confined to your own self.
One way to do this by shaking off the dust and moving about between various sites, Lord knows that there are plenty of methods in the modern world for doing this. One can attain a state of perpetual motion. One problem: no matter where one goes for a new embedding, so too goes whatever the Will has collected. There may be a lag, yet there is also this: (HW #I-40) O SON OF MAN! Wert thou to speed through the immensity of space and traverse the expanse of heaven, yet thou wouldst find no rest save in submission to Our command and humbleness before Our Face.
That is, there is no running away. From what? Again, lots to discuss.
Consider though, that as you look about your 'in situ' situation, things may look fairly normal as a consistent stage for your self and your Will. Ah, the sophisticate will say, we're on a little planet moving about. Yes, can you see that? Ever notice how seemingly eternal themes are always playing out upon some stage that carries along no matter where you go?
For instance, the building that you're in, most likely, has been there for more than a moment. That framework that we all get used to is really persistent. Just what is this thing that grabs so much of our attention, provides an endless stream of characters playing roles, and seems so real? Actually, we know that it is real (SAQ #79).
As said before, here we're building some type of stature implying that the Operational deals with far more than day to day issues with the in situ's unfolding. Science plays along this line, to boot. And, there may actually be things that are local to a site. What?
Remarks:
02/24/2010 -- Ascendant to Transcendent.
12/06/2009 -- The Motivational implies goals and actions.
10/03/2009 -- Another sense, domineering types and those who want to conquer the world. Yes, we're to love our afferent connection to Creation. And, probably more exhibit traits of the autodidact rather than of those who know everything which can result from several sides including certificates that indicate accomplishment of note in one area of thought or endeavor. Will applies to how we filter the afferent, yet it applies more to the efferent activity following the choices made. Or, to the mode, and the motive, of choice.
10/02/2009 -- There's several ways to take 'world-embracing' in terms of meaning. The most common, probably, is that we think and act globally. In a sense, this mode recognizes that everything is connected (SAQ #69) and inter-related (the butterfly argument of the complex systems people, for instance). Trouble is, this sense has been used by those who exploit, and colonize, very effectively thereby wrecking general havoc. Now, another sense, is that we need to embrace the world (physical reality) as it is as much a part of the Kingdom as is the spiritual (SAQ #79). Yes, one example would be a creation-based science.

Cycles 3
Month, Day: 166, Will, Splendour (Beauty)
Will is several things, but an important aspect is our volition as we have several wills, such as will to be and will to do, in brief.
These themes recur. The cycles are relate to iterations: Cycles, Cycles 1, Cycles 2. So, starting from the smaller to larger, we have our own beats, such as the heart. Then, we have the 24 and 7. Then, we have the months and years. And, the larger: we in the 14th of the 9th. And, more.
Somewhat broadly, as the groups to now have been Transcendent, Teleological, and now Operational, if Names are the structure to model and Might denotes the abilities, then Will, which we get to do again, is the control.
So, we need to look at return, implied by cycle and iteration, and acquired knowledge.
SAQ #81: For in this universe of God, which appears in the most complete perfection, beauty and grandeur, the luminous stars of the material universe are innumerable! Then we must reflect how limitless and infinite are the spiritual worlds, which are the essential foundation.
Remarks:
12/05/2010 -- Need to add that, for some views, the cycles ended. This site will be used for the main Islamic information source, for awhile.

Operational III
Month, Day: 166, Might, Loftiness (Glory)
Earlier mentions touched upon topics of concern (The Operational, Ontology from Honour, Operational I, Operational II, Understanding, to name a few).
A particular juxtaposition is very much apropos, yet problematic. For instance, we know that the Manifestations have influenced Creation, including us, periodically through time. Related to that is a Viewpoint that knows. Yet, at the same time, we're to discover our own knowledge.
To a certain extent, that is. As, from the twin duties framework, it's clear how to obtain the proper basis. But, that approach has no hint about things operationally specific, such as that required for technical knowledge.
So, we have seen an increasingly robust set of knowledge, named science, that has no end point and that, to those who are honest, leaves a lot of holes all around. How one fills those holes is very much of interest here, not so much from a judgmental sense as from comparative analysis.
Say what? Some ways are more effective toward achieving goals than are others. For that matter, some are better at stating what is known and at describing goals, in the sense that many solution attempts are strengthened by adequate statement of the problem that is being solved.
So, do we find ourselves at a point where an accumulative set, that is very large, of knowledge diverges from what it might be with some insight into Creation? How many times do we see some model become the focus rather than the reality behind it?
That latter is an example map-territory problem that seems to be rampant nowadays, exacerbated by the success with computational approaches.
SAQ #35: The foreknowledge of a thing is not the cause of its realization ... For example, tonight everyone knows that after seven hours the sun will rise, but this general foreknowledge does not cause the rising and appearance of the sun ...
Firstly, knowing in advance is possible, yet somehow limited. No one gets that free ride. Secondly, many things can be modeled, yet the model can never approach the reality. How do we characterize, and utilize, what is suggested there?
Remarks:
11/21/2010 -- What motivates, indeed.

The Books
Month, Day: 166, Might, Names (Justice)
Month, Day: 166, Might, Might (Majesty)
There are several books, but we're interested in the two primary ones at the moment. The Book of God (let's say, the Writings, et al) and the Book of Nature (let's say, Creation - we'll use small letters, henceforth). The latter will be the focus for awhile with links to various areas of the Former.
Now, science is really a reading of the books of nature, however the main problem is that the readers need to read the book of themselves, to boot. And, that raises some issues overall since the book of oneself encompasses everything from one's ancestry, influences of Creation, and one's particular history. That is, we are an in situ entity, yet beyond any particular point. The motivation for saying this relates to the different prayers in the Tablets that differ by location in the US and Canada.
Science, according to the staunch adherents, filters out those regional issues. Perhaps this is true, in part, however when we're dealing with biology, and humanity, locus becomes important again. One goal of audacity is to start a discussion about this which would lead to field work.
Last time, the stimulus/response dual was touched upon briefly. We need to bring in all aspects of the mechanism that allows us to reside in and relate to creation and its book and that affords us such prowess.
Note: That we need to look at the brain is a given. One question, though, is what further insights will come about related to a fuller knowledge of the pathways and mechanisms.
Remarks:

Twin duties
Month, Day: 166, Might, Perfection (Grace)
A couple of posts mentioned the duties: Transcendent, again and Operational II. We're in the Operational group at this time, hence the theme is apropos: know and obey. The ultimate goal is to know the Manifestation, then observing 'every ordinance' is imperative.
One could argue that evolution works on this theme in a cyclic manner. The Seven Valleys can be used to describe, in part, the dynamics. Look at the month of Knowledge in this post. The triad of Search/Love/Knowledge can be seen as the know part, in the following sense. We have sensor (afferent) nerves, that allow us to judge what is out there beyond ourselves, and action (efferent) nerves, which allow us to act in that real world out there. In Search, there is to be infinite patience as we deal interminably with life. Then, in Love, we differentiate what we are perceiving and how we react. Knowledge drives the incremental learning, assuming that things are working right.
Then, we have Unity as a bridge which is of immense significance. As part of the knowing is being able to see the evidences of the Manifestation. Some describe this ability as some gift (that is, nothing that ought to found hubris) whose properties we do not understand. But, the rudiments of observing are here.
For the obeying to be maximal, we need to continue upward. For now, let's just remember that we're talking Contentment (who ever said that the set on the observance side was constrained - actually, it is not), Wonderment (which needs no further explanation), and finally the last of the Seven Valleys, namely True Poverty and Absolute Nothingness.
Now, the description of the last Valley suggests that these Seven can be traversed in a step, but that there is no ultimate end here (since it is "the first gate of the heart’s citadel"). That is, one can think chord, repeating cycle, and similar.
Why? To continue learning and improving through obeying. What audacity asks is how does this help hone an effective ontology? That is, from applying the know/obey moral of the Twin Duties.
Remarks:
03/10/2010 -- A duty, know the Transcendent.
12/23/2009 -- About the chordal.
09/16/2009 -- We've only looked at a stimulus/response dual without regard to how perception handles the non-autonomous part. However, the brain, and more, will come into play as we go along. In terms of Love, we need to look at attractors, and their complement, knowing that they are two sides of the same thing.

Economics II
Month, Day: 166, Might, Light (Glory)
Month, Day: 166, Might, Words (Perfection)
We touched, way back, on Economics, briefly. Then, there are many E (E1, E2) and R words that we need to consider.
Lately, ran across a paper on Baha'i and Economics which motivates this post while doing other research related to the influence of gaming on capitalism (essentially, casino has been applied) and to the issues raised by computational modeling which are not understood.
It's nice to be reminded that wages under a just system are earned. That concept, plus the notion of what profit and interest ought to mean, are going to be important, especially now which is one year after a crash that got attention universally.
Another paper, on Enlightened Society, appeals for several reasons. For one, progress to maturity requires individuation. Now, that the autodidact's role is of growing importance will be looked at further. No one conquers all disciplines; the modus operandi will be something like being an expert in several and functionally capable in scores of others.
Remarks:
10/04/2010 -- Friction can beget progress.

Understanding
Month, Day: 166, Names, Dominion (Beauty)
Some of these posts are place markers for topics that need further study and discussion. Just like evolution is controversial, so too is understanding (which can be related to comprehension).
Now, anyone with aptitude knows about understanding; in fact, we see success all around from this gift's application. Yet, we know, too, that there is more that is undecidable than there is that is not, even for humans.
This applies to our use of technology which can lead to some views that try to demean the human spirit not without counter views, though, whose basis for argument seems to get more limited in the process. Why? The demeaners are fairly effective at adapting.
As asked before, how can the Writings and, Creation-based science, be used to weigh in on the discussion? That question is meant to be rhetorical and audacious.
For instance, can a machine have understanding? Is this like asking whether (SAQ #55) a vegetable can have animal spirit or an animal can have human spirit? Can that question be formalized to the extent of allowing some technical discussion that has operational meaning?
We know that we humans have understanding. We also know that understanding can be obtained by effort or by gift (can we separate intuition?). And, we know that we're to make the effort; that there are the undecidables bring us to the Sisyphus state (yes, it's true).
So, operationally, how far can we go? Consider this. the Fourth Valley: "Obey Me and I will make you like unto Myself. I say Be and it is. You will say Be and it will be."
See any limits implied? "Herein the high heavens are in no conflict with the lowly earth, nor do they seek to excel it, for this is the land of mercy, not the realm of distinction"
Note: Mathematics, with its axiomatic basis, builds mounds or discovers those already there (basic ontological difference). Any effort at understanding a whole theoretic peak is local, though it seems otherwise. That which encompasses peaks (albeit, via surface interaction or, perhaps, a few probes) is intuition. Where mathematics and intuition (albeit, one that is trained - to be defined) differ, we ought to be suspect (topsy-turvy, thanks Chaitin, comes into play). Of course, all this is arguable, though Names is the beginning of the chain of evidence.
Remarks:
02/24/2010 -- Ascendant to Transcendent.
10/11/2009 -- Will, an operational imperative for science.
09/26/2009 -- An issue for the Operational view.

Technical spirit
Month, Day: 166, Names, Speech (Justice)
Earlier, we were a little secular. Now, let's be a little technical; how else to be operational?
The ACM Communication editor-in-chief (Moshe Y. Vardi) reminds us (The Financial Meltdown and Computing) that the current state of affairs in the economy has been heavily influenced by computation. And, computation is a new phenomenon, that is, that which is the manipulation of Light. The prowess has accelerated tremendously over the years with more promised.
As well, we have 'intelligence' emerging from several places. Reports like AI and hive mentality are commonplace. Day to day, the flow, and fruiting, of ideas runs at a fast, and seemingly never-ending, pace.
So, one has to wonder what all this might mean for audacity and more (He is the most accurate Reckoner (6:62)). That is, as we saw with Babel, how far can we go?
Well, a particular bit of theoretics suggests the answer: Not very far, even with the whole universe as the computer.
The ACM Communication also looked at The Status of the P versus NP Problem (P not equal to NP), recently. Suffice it to say, we can check what we know in many cases (forgetting, for the moment, the issues of underdetermination). In fact, our modus operandi assumes that plus several principles, like ergodicity.
However, pushing back the horizon is always hard. If it becomes easy, then watch out. All of this type of reasoning is of interest to discussions about Faith and Science.
The challenge? Finding, within the Writings, the insights for things like how to help resolve issues, such as the P not equal to NP problem and more. After all, is that not what an operational framework would entail?
Too, science carries over to the Kingdom. It is how we know God.
Remarks:
03/25/2016 -- A change in the calendar will have these Twin Holidays, and other days, adjusting. As well, we have a principal vector upon which to contemplate.
04/03/2015 -- This is a popular post. See NDEers for a bit of audacity. I remember when I first wrote this; the streets of Teheran were buzzing with a spring-like spirit.
09/30/2013 -- More of a technical nature.
05/17/2011 -- Stephen gets press.
05/09/2011 -- We need a constructive re-look.
04/04/2011 -- We'll be looking at things like foreknowledge.
09/06/2009 -- Essentially, more is undecidable than we like to admit, basically due to our talent for success (ergodicity, essentially) keeps the hubris refreshed (generation by generation).

Marriage prayer
Month, Day: 166, Names, Knowledge (Perfection)
This prayer (as do all) has much to tell us about Names.

This prayer (as do all) has much to tell us about Names.
- He is God!
- O peerless Lord! In Thine almighty wisdom Thou hast enjoined marriage upon the peoples, that the generations of men may succeed one another in this contingent world, and that ever, so long as the world shall last, they may busy themselves at the Threshold of Thy oneness with servitude and worship, with salutation, adoration and praise. “I have not created spirits and men, but that they should worship me.” Wherefore, wed Thou in the heaven of Thy mercy these two birds of the nest of Thy love, and make them the means of attracting perpetual grace; that from the union of these two seas of love a wave of tenderness may surge and cast the pearls of pure and goodly issue on the shore of life. “He hath let loose the two seas, that they meet each other: Between them is a barrier which they overpass not. Which then of the bounties of your Lord will ye deny? From each He bringeth up greater and lesser pearls.”
- O Thou kind Lord! Make Thou this marriage to bring forth coral and pearls. Thou art verily the All-Powerful, the Most Great, the Ever-Forgiving.
