Green Acre, 1912

Month, Day: 172, Perfection, Words (Independence)

The Bahai World, Vol. VII (1936-1938) had photos taken at Green Acre in the summer of 1912. I ran across this blog page (Worldwide Community) that provided names of the attendees with the photos. On seeing this mapping (individuals are numbered) of names to the photos, a couple of things came to mind. For one, some of those there have descendants. It would be nice to identify web stuff that might relate to these descendants (disclosure: the blogger knows families that were there). Then, we could talk about the ancestry of some attendees as they are descendants of old American families.

In the blog post, there are four photos which are shown below in order by panels. Also, in the post, the people are numbered; names are provided where someone is known. The Master is in Panel 3.

Below, I took the names and separated them by the panels (pick Panel name to see the image). In Panel 1 are (1) Fred Mortenson, (2) Charles Mason Remey, and (87) Alfred Eastman Lunt.

I put in a link to a blog about Henry Lunt who is the arriving ancestor (1634) of Alfred E. Lunt. This will be an on-going effort.

08/09/2015 -- Alfred Eastman Lunt is a descendant of Henry Lunt (1634), as is Thornton Chase who was not present.

05/27/2019 -- Changed the link for Alfred Eastman Lunt to point to his findagrave record. This week, I worked on his mother's family after seeing that her findagrave had been updated improperly. Still working to get those changes done (don't manage the records, updates have been requested). His mother was Elizabeth A. (Blake) Lunt. Her findagrave record now points to the appropriate mother and father for her, John Blake and Ruth S. Ladd. Too, their records point to work on WikiTree where information is being shown as we research.

New Englanders

Month, Day: 176, Names, Might (Majesty)

Somehow, missed Perfection the start of which 8/1 was of both calendars.

Alfred is mentioned several times, in the blog. Grandfather and cousin of Thornton Chase.

Note: Learned that Alfred E. Lunt had been injured in a car accident prior to his demise. The accident was on 25 May 1937. His brother was driving. Alfred died on 12 Aug 1937. Two things to note. He can be put amongst the victims of the carnage brought by technology, namely the automobile. Too, as periodicals, such as newspapers, get digitized, we can expect for more of this type of information to shuffle up to awareness.

Crush the mind

Month, Day: 176, Honour, Honour (Justice)

This counsel, to me, depicts the hierarchy that we see the Guardian referring to in one of the Pilgrim Notes. Those who labor, without proper remuneration and absent of any type of respect? They can still think of 'worship' and the value of their efforts.

Along that line, while so involved with the mundane, one can think. This we can teach. It is not only those enclosed in the higher world of the academic garden who can conceptualize and benefit from 'creative design' related to imaginative metaphysics.

Thornton Chase

Month, Day: 169, Glory, Mercy (Glory)

It was this day, Apr 14, that the Titanic sank. Too, we're three days past the arrival of the Master to the American shores.

Since the next few months can be associated with the visit of 1912, there will be all sorts of possible topics to look at. One of these is Thornton Chase.

The Master changed his itinerary in order to visit Thornton's grave.

Bahá’ís of the United States

It is interesting to note that both of Thornton's parents have deep American roots. His father descended from Aquila Chase who came over from Chesham in 1630, pursuing religious freedom. Some other families in the Chase tree are Dudley, Bradstreet, Tufts, Lunt, and Cotton. His mother's family included some of those plus Hutchinson and Bachiler.

Why of note? This is about 200 years prior to the Twin Days where we can apply reflection (see About the Middle, George's Lessons, Reckoner II). We'll get into this more through time.

Hierarchy

Month, Day: 176, Third Intercalary Day (Independence)

This one matches up with the 29th of Feb, that rare bird.

The Guardian is quoted in one of the Pilgrim Notes as saying that there is an hierarchy in the Faith as there is in life. The Writings, elsewhere, mention the highers knowing more than those below. We see other references like this. The Master praised the physicians who got it right. None have, that I can see (long story of patient advocacy going back decades). We would trust our lives to such. Which we do, by caveat. Some get better due to treatment. But, there are plenty of horror stories, too.

I go by the ending of the Aqdas. No one in their right mind would want to be King. That is easy to describe. Jung touched upon the subject. Oh yes, the Guardian pointed to Psychology in at least one instance. That can be as medical as the other disciplines. Except, pharma intervenes.

Speaking of which, an early post (Crush the mind) included a counsel for prayer from the Master to Alfred E. Lunt (in-law). To me, it has lots of significance. Anyone who thinks that those born lowly can rise on their own need to reexamine their thinking. Some are of the mud, from birth. 'mud' here is of a lots of meanings. The Guardian stressed the materialism of the west (northern type). After all, Africa is west of Asia. Northern type? Lots to discuss there.

Eons and Manifestations have resulted in locale issues. Sure, there can be action at a distance, when the metric is manipulated. However, locality and its power bear attention. Hence, adages of removing oneself like we see with the big pocket'd thinking of launching away from the earth (God's footstool) since they see the messes that we've created.

The point? Those lowly can still rise in their minds and hearts. Some point to the after-life's importance to some belief systems in this regard and cough into their hands (scoff). However, as that prayer says, and the Tablet of the True seeker suggests, and as we see with the Valley of Search, there ought to be no limit to striving. What to strive for is another topic to be on the table.

Back to hierarchy, many at the top live by the means of oodles beneath them. That has always been a problem. And, for the most part, those invisibles never get attention, that is, until something goes wrong. Then blame flames. So that might be the game's structure. The adage of not coming down on the sinner (not talking the issues of reward and punishment, rather of individual judgment of others - which is a trap that the well-honed mind likes to fall into) since one knows not one's own end (see the Koran, too) is an very important one.

At the same time, doormats never thrive. But, the earth never complains. Oh yes, it does. Lots of upheavals (and not just in the crust) come about.

Agriculture and more

While looking at the site about the Master's journey to the U.S., saw the He was about to go north and then west. So, that motivated a look to see what a search on Alfred E. Lunt would bring about. He was an early Baha'i who live in New England. We'll get back to Mr. Lunt at some point.

I found this page, amongst other things, about agriculture. The quote, from a Tablet to an individual says a lot about how we ought to be: Thou hadst made reference in thy letter to agriculture. On this matter He hath laid down the following universal rule: that it is incumbent upon everyone, even should he be resident in a particular land for no more than a single day, to become engaged in some craft or trade, or agriculture, and that the very pursuit of such a calling is, in the eyes of the one true God, identical with worship. This rule was exemplified by the Bahá’í community at the time when they were facing exile from ‘Iraq, for, while they were making arrangements for their journey, they occupied themselves in cultivating the land; and when they set out, instructions were given for the fruits of their labours to be distributed amongst the friends.

There is so much to consider here. Lazing about is definitely not in order. That is, one would think that we would have more than gratification for all of the work done to feed us: growing, transporting, cooking, ...

Too, cannot we harness, perhaps, all that energy wasted through exercise, etc.? You do see some who exercise generating power through their efforts, rather than the other way of exercise equipment being a net user of power.

Does the above have a message for how infrastructure, which we have seen decay right and left due to it being ignored - taken for granted, ought to be handled? It's a community affair.

07/17/2012 -- This is great!! It does help with infrastructural issues in the following sense. Rather than have an enslaved group (perpetually, through generations) be those who do the work, it would be shared by all and would be considered worship. The current bifurcation, some call class warfare, would then have no motivating power.

Up and down

Month, Day: 176, Knowledge, Sovereignty (Glory)

The recent global "72 hours of bicentenary coverage" is an example of the former. It's great to see the Twin Festivals brought together. In the old days, my birth day brought in the start (10/20). Then, we had 24 days until Oct. 12. Now, there are some years where the celebrations might be close to 10/20. But, Nov. 12 is out of range.

Celebrations can lift if done right.

But, work reigns, too. As service, we are told. For some, that is definitely a downer. As well, there is plenty about life that can pull one down. So, we are to cope with, handle, both sides of this. So much is involved that there is only a brief reference here in order to bring in the below.

The Master wrote a letter to Alfred Lunt that provides some counsel in this area. You all know, some modern employment is really a type of slavery. So, again, we're punting this discussion down the road.

I pulled this off of a FB page which had picked it up from the "Star of the West." Alfred (Bahaipedia) is #87 in this photo at Green Acre in the summer of 1912. That's 109 years ago. Several of his family members are there: his wife, child, in-laws, friend, and many cousins (as in, old New England families that started the whole thing of the American Dream - lots to look at there).

Read this: patience but not sitting idle; smile (as in grin and bear it); joy (in the face of huge odds); no fear, except of God; etc. I thought that it was interesting that the Master took this tact. Well, one grandson of Alfred spent his career organizing labor. One thinks of the current bifurcations that have resulted from several factors that we have to look at further.

In short, the lot of many is hard work. I would rather be there than resting in a chair, I always said.

Now, those whose hand have nary a callous to show have no say in how spirituality relates to those who labor. Think of that. One huge source of conflict (and the resulting bifurcations) is that those who labor are way more smart than they are given credit. Many who do not labor wish that they were 'it' and the epitome of something (not so). Intelligence does not imply that one will rise to being ineffective.

Actually, agriculture having such a high status implies work of the nature that can be quite healthy both physically and spiritually. We have not gotten this right.

Yes, so much to look at.

Technology and civilization

Month, Day: 178, Splendour, Might (Perfection)

While browsing posts on FB (Group titled "Stories of the Hands of the Cause"), Dorothy Baker was mentioned. The post was dated 3 Nov 2020 and included three images: a portrait of Dorothy, a photo of a plane, and a snapshot at Akka's view of the Mediterranean.

Per usual, I went to look for information as I do when I learn about a person. One can find information in various places, such as a FindAGrave profile: Dorothy Beecher Baker (1898-1954). Then I saw that there had been a plane crash (more below). Before going further, I followed some links, such as this profile on Bahaipedia: Dorothy Beecher Baker. There we have a brief look at her family history plus there is a reference to the infamous crash (again, below). However, there is also a quote from Dorothy: “If I could really have my choice, I would be buried at sea. “And if I could choose the sea, then it would be the Mediterranean, whose waves will lap eternally on the shores of ‘Akká.”

The significance still didn't ring. So, I continued looking and found out that her grandmother (Ellen Tuller Beecher) had an OBE when she was younger in which she saw the Master Who she met when He was in the U.S. in 1912. I like that the site that reported on the 100th celebration of this momentous occasion, by blogging back, in 2012 (centenary.bahai.us), is still around.

Of particular interest, at the time, was the New England ancestry/history of many of the folks in the area (such as Thornton Chase). Too, it was interesting to see a Quaker influence which was quite influential in the area, starting a few centuries earlier.

That brief overview is full of potential future research which overlaps the interest related to the start of the U.S. from the beginning 400 years ago. Pertinent will be studies related to families 250 years ago when there was a split between the patriots and the loyalists both of which groups have modern descendants. However, an area of rich mining potential would be the western expansion of 200 years ago when remnants of New England, New Spain, and New France meet up and when the country fills in.

The theme? Civilization requires people to advance both from the station control and guidance and from that of those upon whose back things get done. A reminder in this regard is the letter sent by the Master to Alfred Eastman Lunt (Crush the mind). And progress in Civilization requires technology, which again has various stations involved.

Myself, I have seen all of the levels, personally, hence my viewpoints on various matters. Some of those have been expressed in this blog; albeit, on-going research is the mode that is imperative.

Dorothy was on the plane that demonstrated the new requirements for air travel. Some talk, test by death. Of late, we might have seen spiritual death from the propagation of those silly devices that are so addictive to people without anyone, that I can see, trying to understand. But, that's the responsibility fo the station that drives things awry, eventually. Much to discuss there.

Speaking of engineering, though, Boeing had made another decision through their analysis. In fact, the company had several decades of success with one model not having any performance failures of the major catastrophic type which is phenomenally important. Mostly, this is due to the processes put into place through a collaborative effort across stations.

Why use stations? Good point. We'll get to that, eventually. But, about a decade later, I had a high-school friend go down in the Mediterranean on a U.S. Navy fighter jet. Not knowing the specifics, I can surmise that some parameter set was exceeded due to our always having limited understanding. This has to do, in part, with the Science and Religion dynamic which is of such difficulty. We can observe things being pushed out earlier than they ought with the people bearing the consequences. Too, we can observe a more conservative approach, yet even with that our control is not absolute. And, those of the BWF will be influential, some day. I have not seen this, yet.

Given that the post mentioned dreams, I can talk of one type that I have had over the years that relate to my friend. Two things come to mind beyond the fact that these instances occur: 1) there seems to be some parallel development, 2) they have it better than do we.

Be that as it may, we can say that it's too bad that DeHavilland was the one; it went defunct in 1963. Plenty of other companies have been responsible for much worse and are still around. Wait, that type of economic/ethical surmising is out of line?

Well, recently, we had two instances much like we saw with that 1954 crash. These two resulted in the plane being grounded for a long while during a period of analysis, fixing and testing. It is about to go back to the sky. Methinks that people just take for granted the little miracles that are required for a flight to go to and arrive at some destination. Perhaps, we might find appropriate metaphors in the Quran that would help us paint a picture that really needs some attention.

In any case, one of our tasks might be a taming of STEM which can present us with beasts of various natures, such as we might be seeing with types of AI presentations. My role? These are very hard issues that we face, as the Master alluded to with His counsel to Alfred.

Bahira

Month, Day: 177, Grandeur, Power (Majesty)

Having been born and raised a Christian, I never heard of this story: Bahira. I got to this revelation in a circuitous manner. First, though, events over the past five decades bring forward a concept related to technology's child and its worldview, namely computationalism. That concept is a couple of decades old and can be called truth engineering. At its core is that psychether is part of the regular set of energies with which we can feel comfortable and use for the purposes of advancing civilization. It's about time, actually.

Having read three translations of the Quran over these same decades (now, keeping with Rodwell due to its use in several publications, including the Iqan), knowing that the Guardian noted that we ought to know Islam to its core (which would include culture), having read that psychology ought to be studied (in ways yet to be seen, to me, that implies computational modes abetted with a better understanding of our natures), being aware that some of the teachings of Islam appeal to a scientific view even if such a suggestion is shouted down by the progressive mind, and more, I finally realized that the Orientalists of the little isle that gave us the Brits (and we gave them the Guardian) are more than the few mentioned by Baha'is, and, actually, started to read some of these.

The first thing of interest was the pre-history, before the Year of the Elephant. That can be juxtaposed with my northern European ancestry which has some of the southern mixed in, from a deep viewpoint of the genes actually telling us something when coupled with psythether. Too, the seven heavens of the Night Journey have so many more meanings that we see discussed.

That Orientalists are writing is of no concern to the intuition, as the dissonance is no more than looking at the notes of Rodwell who ventures off the proper path many times. The Guardian didn't barf at that.

As a side note, that the Islamic culture was in Spain for so many centuries is a factor, to boot, in terms of the upcoming discourse. And, in the US, where was there this for the most part represented? The Southwest, and the left coast, of course. Ah, the US? Of course, these dynamics through time have elements related to locale, to boot. Yes, the flitting around can push those nuances to the background.

Let's go back, for the moment, to the Letter to AELunt. For the few who bop around in the upper realms, there are myriads whose sole existence is as backbone (or structure of sorts). Civilization would not continue without this. Envy the boppers with their jet setting? No. I know what goes into the planes and how easily they can fall from the sky (to wit, the past couple of years). On the other hand, aware of the failings that are so visible to those who look? You bet. From the ground up.

That's what can be considered a view that needs a little more elaboration: Johnny Appleseed (cuz) was real.

Nothing to add. The text and context says a whole lot.

Myself, I have just spelt out the name of the Glory until statis occurred.

An interesting point is that continual invocation could interfere with proper action. But, one could consider that this is a good reminder of God during the difficult times of coping with the new world as it has unfolded since 1844.

In these terms? Technology and its ability to warp human thought as well as to play havoc with our truth processing.

Again, myself? I point to the prayer to Alfred E. Lunt.

Crafts and respect

THE FIRST TARAZ

The right path is a path which leads man to the day spring of perception and dawning-place of knowledge and directs him to that which is the cause of honor and glory and greatness. We hope that, by the providence of the wise Physician, the dust will be removed from his eyes and the clearness of his sight will increase; so that he may discover that for which he has been created. In this day that which will decrease blindness and increase sight is worthy of attention. To the possessors of wisdom this spiritual sight is the minister and guide of knowledge. The apprehension of knowledge is due to the power of insight. The people of Bahá must, in all cases, act and advise people in that which is worthy.

Lots involved here. First, refer back to the AELunt letter. Then, consider that 'laborer' is a craft; one uses one's body for a purpose. Deserves lots of respect due to this type of job, many times, being dangerous. But, caregiver, too, is a type of craft.

Why this? Not sure that others than the esteemed Drs get any attention. These are not the people that get things done. Whereas, in my time amongst the working class, I met many smart people. Too, we all face God alone when it's our time. Too, even the lowliest can know. Now, back to the letter and note 'do not yield' said the Master.

Methinks, He was noting the long history of Lunt's family (my in-laws) in the torturous long history of the U.S. that is so misunderstood by so many. Again, more to look at.

Interesting mixes

Month, Day: 169, Names, Knowledge (Independence)

We don't get triples like today, often. We have to have Names in order to found the proper Knowledge. Then, Independence is always necessary.

In short, even the smart get group think now and then.

That begs the question of when do we actually know the truth, for ourselves.

Even if we don't, we have much to rely on. The Master's long duration in New England suggests that. Lessons from that gift will be long-time studied.

Why use mixes? We'll have some analog of the periodic table as an example (to be described, eventually - what's the hurry?). Then, combinations change, covering an underlying structure that is properly supportive, yet beneath our grasp. Time may be used as an index, but it is not the only one. That key will open a whole bunch of doors, leading to the required 'new' science.

Green Acre 1912, again

Month, Day: 179, Questions, Loftiness (Independence)

Last of Questions, which is the science month, means that Honour is next up. This is both a look back and forward, as the new year (2023) looms.

In August of 2015, we did a post using photos from a Green Acre, ME visit by lots of folks to see the Master. There are many in the photo that we know of and want to research further. For instance, the Ober family was involved with the property and were friends of the family. There was an index made of the persons there. Some were not known. A few children were shown, one of whom is the grandmother of known persons.

One motivation for this work is that ME was part of MA until the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which was a couple of hundred years ago. Too, at that point, the western migrations were just beginning. From our research, New England's long reach is there throughout what we call the frontier century. Besides that commemoration, we have the 250th of the Revolution and many families there supported the patriot cause which forced the split from the Crown's overview.

And, going back further, many of these families are descendants of original colonists. We mentioned Lunt's ancestry, but some of the other names are Ober, Woodbury, Thompson, Spinney, Russell, Pease, Morse, Brewster, and others. Massachusetts has had two 400ths so far: Plymouth (2020) and Weymouth (2022). Next year, Gloucester (2023) will recognize their heritage which involves an effort to establish agriculture and fishery entities under the auspices of the Dorchester Company. Of note is that a lot of the leadership came from the Cambridge side of things.

From a cultural sense, what happened in the New World has parallels with what happened worldwide over more than a century where we have symmetry now using 1844 as the pivot. Those are studies that need to be identified, described and supported over the next few decades, especially given the newest perturbations that come via the introduction of complexity via computational frameworks going wild.

This is introductory. See the original post for the photo links and the list of attendees. To make this interesting, at the same time, we will be looking at the unfolding of modern mathematics over the same timeframe. And, one can use Harvard (400th coming up) and its mathematical history (especially, using the Peirce family) for comparative purposes.

Operational modes

Month, Day: 178, Will, Honour (Perfection)

This is cursory and meant to crystallize some reflective notions. The necessary work has to do with operational concerns, on an on-going basis. The rampant abuse that can result from various technological achievements has to be mitigated through people understanding the dynamics on all levels.

Motivation: The Masters Prayer sent to Alfred E. Lunt (grandfather, 8th generation in the U.S. - died in 1937). This is with respect to what the American dream might be and how it applies to those who see it.

As well, yes, I am familiar with the Baha'i Cosmology as written on Wikipedia (get link).

God/Manifestation (see Writings)
Creation/Covenant (Master, Guardian)
Philosophy/Mathematics (our knowingness)
Others (necessary realization, significance)
Philosophy/Mathematics (applied, operational)
Technology (abilities and artifacts)
Evolution (energy)

If one thinks of 7V4V, that is fine. We have periods and cycles.

The advent of the computer compels us to look at things differently than we did before. In this hierarchy, of course, there is both top-down and bottom-up. It can be secularized (that's the whole idea).

This linear string is happenstance. We are talking embedding of various sorts. It may be that the transition to a secular view that can be modeled, in terms of truth engineering, will help elucidate some of the particulars that will seem too fuzzy. BTW, others? Unity, of course.

Month, Day: 169, Perfection, Perfection (Justice)

A double day, in an important month.

This is the 100th anniversary of an unprecedented event. The Master's visit to the U.S. came less than 150 years after its start. Too, given His roles, there are all types of significances. Looking for these can be interesting and instructive.

In terms of time, He spent much more in New York City and Washington DC than any other place. The month out in the west pales when compared with time spent on the east coast. But, the population density was much greater in those eastern realms. The massive buildup on the west coast came a little later. L.A. was still an almost sleepy town, in comparison.

His jaunt up to Montreal was brief, too. There were several visits to Chicago, but the days don't add up that much.

It's nice that the diaries and periodical articles have been organized. Too, we have photos from the time or taken later in an area where the Master visited. So, looking at this collection brings out a lot.

Now, take New England and its importance. Well, it was the cradle, more than anywhere else in the U.S., of the new nation that was visited by God's representative a mere 100+ years after its inception. And, New England's history will be retold using insights from the Writings (as will a whole bunch of disciplines, once the framework for doing this has been worked out -- it's mathematical, at its basis -- mathematical from an universal sense).

Calling New England the cradle is not warranted? Well, Virginia did play a major role. As well, we have those intermediate states playing a part. Yet, the influx into New England (in other words, The Great Migration, as titled by the NEHGS), for a period of time and from Northern Europe, principally England, surpassed that of the other areas.

The result of this massive influx put into a place a type of social cauldron from which American characteristics were forged. Some of the current problems can be understood within this context. The proper analysis has not been done, as of yet. The blogger is too old to see fruits; just knowing that the studies have an onset would be sufficient.

The 'illustrious' ones of New England came to see the Master, especially the women. It's interesting that His 'hostess' in New England (Mrs. Agnes Parsons) is of an old American family (early entrants, Virginia, in particular). Looking at her diary reads like a social register, almost.

The beauty of the place was well appreciated. In more than one case, the Master mentioned that His Father's imprisonment kept Him from enjoying such wonderful examples of Creation's bounties. Too, there are little things that pop out. He noted (paraphrase) that certain types of social events can corrupt morals. Too, a visit to one of the early players in the military-industrial complex did not go over well. But, He did tell the Canadians that they needed to attend to their defense, that is, being prepared to defend themselves in the coming war (WWI). The story of allowing oneself to be slapped was used in one of the talks.

Of course, reading these things from a diary, by definition, means that one is getting a personal view (hopefully, truthfully written). So, any description found therein that talked about an observation or even a quote (assuming, heard correctly) would be an interpretation (which we know are private).

Aside: Science is built upon mathematics which requires interpretive inputs at several points. That mathematics is a type of 'truth' that is expressively clear is an insidious overlay from 20th century thinking. In some cases, it's a carry over from the efforts at pushing spirit out of human matters (science is an human endeavor, remember?). Hence, science's basis has an interpretative element. We know that is true, in the small (see earlier post). It's true, too, in the grand, extrapolative scheme. Yet, these types of decisional things get covered up. That is, the mainstream takes it route; other possible avenues get reduced to potential cracker-ism if re-discovered. Now, the Writings may not be a 'propositional' source, yet the Writings do carry sufficient information to found a very sold worldview. How will the definition of this come about?

As said above, the blogger is past his prime. He did work this out 45 years ago. It's worth the effort to found the discussion, in spite of the cries of the conventional. Hence, the blog. Too, the cheeky use of audacity.

Aside: The blogger has been, during his times, in all of the cities visited by the Master in the U.S. though not always being aware that there had been the Presence. So, it's not like a pilgrimage, but there is a record of this in memory and on the ether. Serendipitous convergence, somewhat.
