Higher goals

Month, Day: 166, Speech, Perfection (Perfection)

In terms of motivation, we can know various things, such as why things are and how we are to do and with what to do. Too, there can be continual attuning of the focus as choice is always there. Actually, the accounting (HW #31) ought to be daily.

Questions may abound, but we can know that the means exist.

Aqdas #70: All that are on earth shall pass away, while good deeds alone shall endure; to the truth of My words God doth Himself bear witness.

Whence do we see this? That is, questions are of science.

Remarks:

10/02/2011 -- More on means.

12/05/2010 -- Is it not true that extreme positions on the axis of the mindful can lead to a god-like state-fulness?

12/06/2009 -- The Motivational implies goals and actions.

What motivates?

Month, Day: 166, Speech, Glory (Grace)

What motivates? Well, we can talk about a lot of things. But, speaking from the position of being in a colder clime, one can say that just preparing to go out into the elements involves a bunch of motivation types. In the warmer climes, there are things that are easily ignored. Except, even then, one ought to think ahead and to look at using, perhaps, sunscreen before going into direct sunlight.

Some motivation can deal with necessities, for a large part. But, there is more to the story; mathematical problem solving requires motivation. Maslow had some insightful thoughts about how progress goes away from baser motivations.

We cannot look at motivation without considering the economic aspects.

A lot come under this concept. Yet, the real basis is what we see with the twin duties.

Motivational II

Month, Day: 166, Speech, Splendour (Perfection)

We're 14 months into the year and into the 2nd (Speech) of this group. We asked why Motivational for this group which will be followed by the Ascendant? Well, we saw that there is energy imparted in spring of each year, like a yearly measure.

Those early times, each year, are the Transcendent and Teleological. In the northern climes, we see the peak of the energy of summer in the Operational. Where, too, the fruits of this energy are abundant.

Then, the Motivational times are during the slowing down times, again in the northern climes, post harvesting and gathering. We see that much of the vegetative life goes into a suspended state, so to speak, as do some animals. In fact, many mammals do their retreat into hibernation.

The yearly changes, seasons, have been used as a metaphor for life. The juxtaposition of a cross-generational match is termed, May-October. So, it goes, too, for these Groups.

Somehow, it seems that this time is one for review. That is, from a sense of science, we would be looking at results. Then, when the Ascendant comes around, we would then work on rework of the necessary hypotheses.

Isn't it nice that we have these cycles always there?

Motivational

Month, Day: 166, Power, Dominion (Glory)
Month, Day: 166, Power, Loftiness (Beauty)

There might be some question about the name for this group which consists of Power, Speech, Questions, and Honour, whereas the others (Transcendent, Teleological, Operational) seem to more easily fit. Perhaps, that'll be addressed as the other months unfold.

We're almost done with Power which contained one of the Twin Days and which is a fairly central theme. Then, we will have the basis for science, namely Questions, following Speech and preceding Honour.

Much to ponder.

Power is

Month, Day: 166, Power, Power (Perfection)
Month, Day: 166, Power, Speech (Grace)
Month, Day: 166, Power, Questions (Justice)

We can reasonably ask, what is power (and Power - SAQ #42)?

As we see described by dictionary.com and wikipedia, power implies 'being able' in various ways. And, we see it starting the Motivational group which ought to have great importance.
  • Power, too, pertains to both potential and action.
  • Isaiah: Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.
  • Iqan: Material fire consumeth the body, whereas the fire of the tongue devoureth both heart and soul. The force of the former lasteth but for a time, whilst the effects of the latter endure a century.

Power of music

Month, Day: 166, Power, Words (Grace)
Month, Day: 166, Power, Knowledge (Beauty)

As with anything, we have issues in the large and in the small, with the latter pertaining to the individual.

In the large, music is becoming more pervasive, and observable, as technology improves delivery and recording, however music is as old as we are.

And, it has a spiritual side where both words and tunes apply (Tablets #74).

In the current era, there would be plenty of places to begin an analysis, but Glenn Miller is a very good starting point. Then, one could look at how music changes over time including having more, and wider, awareness, such that some stars have a larger following than did some earlier kings.

In the small, it is interesting that technology can allow a type of immortality. One has to wonder if music could play more of a role as an educational resource than we have thought, as in, for one example, providing a means to convey meaning in an experiential fashion (SAQ #16).

Our power

Month, Day: 166, Power, Glory (Majesty)
Month, Day: 166, Power, Light (Beauty)

The Operational is done for the year, except for those monthly occurrences of days (Names, Might, Will, Knowledge).

The Motivational, which just started, consists of Power, Speech, Questions (basis for science), Honour.

We humans have several types of power, including the ability to use tools which causes all sorts of artifacts to abound. For the most part, our prowess has, can have, benefits (ever-advancing civilization). These we need to understand better.

Too, we have mental powers. Here, hubris can run amok as we see. How to dampen? Well, one way is prayer and thoughtful reflection on the Writings.

How does, or can, that impact our abilities to do science? Well, we know that we can know some things a priori, in the Kantian sense as well as that related to the Transcendent and the Teleological. But, there are limits as we have been told (4th Valley: Were all the denizens of earth and heaven to unravel this shining allusion, this darksome riddle, until the Day when the Trumpet soundeth, yet would they fail to comprehend even a letter thereof, for this is the station of God’s immutable decree, His foreordained mystery. Hence, when searchers inquired of this, He made reply, “This is a bottomless sea which none shall ever fathom.” And they asked again, and He answered, “It is the blackest of nights through which none can find his way.” ). Some of the limits are Operational, such as that type described by Heisenberg, and some result from analytic-synthetic dynamics, requiring acknowledgment for the quasi-empirical framework.

In short, we need to know better the two ways of knowing and doing.

Operational IV

Month, Day: 166, Knowledge, Loftiness (Grace)

As we leave the Operational times, a final thought might be in order. 2nd Valley: This station conferreth the true standard of knowledge, and freeth man from tests. In this realm, to search after knowledge is irrelevant, for He hath said concerning the guidance of travelers on this plane, “Fear God, and God will instruct thee.” And again: “Knowledge is a light which God casteth into the heart of whomsoever He willeth.”

The Motivational starts with Power.
